The story opens with Emma, a prosperous but emotionally distant woman, returning to her childhood home for a celebration of her 80th birthday arranged by her grandmother Helen. A diverse collection of family members, each harbouring secrets and resentments of their own, are brought together for this occasion. Beneath the surface tensions begin to show during the family gathering. The focus is on Emma's tense relationship with her estranged father, John, and her rebellious teenage daughter, Sarah.
