A Life Overseas Reconstructed
Following the death of his first wife, Irish parent Jason Corbett and his kids moved to the United States in search of a new beginning. After traveling to North Carolina, he wed Molly Martens, an American who appeared eager to assist him in starting a new life and raising his children. They seemed to be building a promising blended family together. However, tensions that would eventually result in tragedy were growing behind the walls of their house.
A Night That Revolutionized Everything
When Jason was discovered dead in his North Carolina bedroom in 2015, grief struck. Given the gravity of his wounds, Molly and her father, former FBI agent Tom Martens, came under immediate suspicion. They defended their actions by saying they were necessary to keep Molly safe from Jason's onslaught. But that version of events was never accepted by Jason's relatives in Ireland. They pushed for explanations and maintained that Jason would never have done something violent. Watch the movie for free in high definition on MyFlixer.
The Courtroom Problems and Tensions
This resulted in a protracted and intricate court struggle. In 2017, Tom and Molly were both found guilty of second-degree murder and given prison terms. But that was not the end of the story. After concerns over the initial court proceedings were voiced, a retrial was allowed years later. Suddenly, in 2024, Molly and Tom agreed to a plea bargain on lesser manslaughter charges. Their release from prison as part of this bargain caused a great deal of controversy and heartache, particularly for Jason's family.
The Story Told Through Film
A Deadly American Marriage: The documentary exposes the emotional and legal struggle that led to Jason's death. Real phone conversations, home recordings, and in-depth interviews with family members are used to reconstruct the events leading up to Jason's last moments and the traumatic court cases that ensued. Courtroom footage gives the story a more genuine, urgent, and intensely personal sense.
